Angry letter (draft)

1544 Haku Street

December 3, 2014

Shimazu Store
330 North School Street
Honolulu, HI 96817

Dear Shimazu Administration,

My family and I have been going to your store for many years to eat shave ice, even when it used to be B&S Store.  Every time we were around the Liliha area, my sisters and I would beg our parents or grandparents to go to your store, wait in the long line, and eat shave ice, especially the strawberry.

However, recently we have had some concerns about the prices of your shave ice.  Just  last weekend my family and I went to your store to eat shave ice and found out that your prices have gotten extremely high.  I noticed that throughout the years that I have been going, your prices have risen from about $2.25 to the current cost of $4.00.  I understand that the size of your shave ice is huge and there are many different favors to choose from, however,  the price is to high for a weekly treat.  Many customers also want to add toppings such as azuki beans, mocha balls, condensed milk, or li hing powder.  These additions cost 75 cents or more for EACH topping!

Although you have the best shave ice on the island, spending $5.00 for an afternoon snack is more expensive than two school lunches!  Perhaps making a smaller sized shave ice for a reasonable price would be better for young children who cannot finish an entire shave ice by themselves.

Shimazu shave ice is a well-known treat and should be enjoyed by all.  If your prices were more reasonable, we would be able to enjoy your shave ice regularly, not just as a once in awhile  treat.

I understand that since your shave ice is so popular that even if you raise your prices, people will still come.  But I  feel that your longtime regular customers, like my family and me, will not be able to continue to enjoy our favorite strawberry shave ice as often as we would like.

Sincerely,

Brianne Sumida

Cyber bullying final draft

Technology today has changed and improved over the years.  All these new apps that help us keep in touch with all the different events in the world can lead to cyber bullying.  Typically, to bully a person by use of electronics communication is sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.  Cyber bullies nowadays use apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Myspace to intimidate others.

Today, nearly 43% of teenagers have been bullied online.  One in four occasions happened more then once.  Scientists show that most of the kids that are being cyber bullied get bullied in person as well.  The newer the technology, the easier it will become for someone to get bullied.  Most of the time, when someone gets bullied online, they are least likely to get caught, because they can just do it anonymously.  It was proven that many teens who get cyber bullied are most likely to use alcohol, drugs, skip school, or even receive poor grades.

Throughout the last decade, there have been many tragic cases of young teens being cyber bullied.  For example, Tina Meier committed suicide because of her weight at the age of 13.  She  added a guy named John on Myspace and started talking to him.  She said that he was one of the few people who thought she was pretty,  but a while later he started saying things like "the world would be better off without you."  That's when she committed suicide.  Committing suicide is one of the most tragic thing young teens do when they become cyber bullied.

Sources say that cyber bullying consists of sending or posting cruel messages, photos or videos on the internet or any electronic media with intent of damaging the reputation of the target.  Many victims of cyber bullying tend to change the way they act or dress.  Most of the time they change their personality into someone totally different from themselves.  They keep that different personality hoping that the person bullying them would stop. Most of the time, the bully would keep harassing them until they break.

Today, teenagers think that cyber bullying isn't a big deal but it is!  The kids that have been cyber bullied have a hard time standing up for themselves.  They think that the bully is more powerful then themselves.  This causes them to loose the confidence they once had in themselves.  Cyber bullying is a terrible thing which can cause depression, sadness, loneliness, and even suicide.

Risky business Rough draft (cyberbullying)

Cyber bullying for very few people could be a good thing like gaining self confidence for people who don't have any confidence, but for most people its a terrible thing for someone to do.  It can cause so many problems for the kids that had been cyber bullied, for instance feeling sadness & loneliness, having the lost if interest they enjoyed doing in the pas before they were bullied, and even committing too suiccide.  Now days we have so much technology most people find useful and helpful.  Just think a little for a moment about what technology can do to kids now days like cyber bullying.

Now days social media has so many goods and bade about it.  This depends on how you use these different social media sites or apps.  For some people they really don't like so social media even though it's a really helpful source.  But people take that source for granted by cyber bullying people.  When people get cyber bullied they tend to start feeling sad&lonley.  When they start to get those feels they start to exclude there self for the social life and most of there friends.

Cyber bullying has so many affects that people can have when one is cyber bullied the most common is probably comitting to suiccide.  Now days if you see on the news or newspaper you here every so often someone committed to suiccide.  Mostly if kids committe to suiccide now days it probably from cyberbullying.  This affect is one of the most horrifying thing anyone can do.  This is one of the most horrible affects to suiccide.

The last affect of cyber bullying and how it is cause by social media is having the list of interest of things they enjoyed doing before they were cyber bullied.  this is the most tragic one because it's like losing all you hobbies you have enjoyed and it just dissapears.  Many kids might have this problem because they could have been cyber bullied on the sport they played or what they enjoyed or liked.  This is why cyberbullying can cause the lost of interest of things they enjoyed dong before they were bullied.

Cyber bullying to some people can be a good thing like gaining self confidence,  but too most people it's a terrible thing for some one to do it can cause suiccide, the lack of sadness&lonliness,  and the Lost of interest of things they enjoyed during before they were bullied.  This is only one of the many problems social media can cause If you don't use it in the right way.

describe the best and worst day of your life (college essay final)

August 29, 2009 was a day that I will never forget.  The tears on my face were flowing down as if it were the biggest waterfall on earth. The hospital was always the worst place for me, ever since I was a baby.  I was born with a heart defect called Tetrology of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresea.  That means that I was born without a pulmonary artery and had a hole in my heart.  I have had two open heart surgeries and need to go to the hospital every six months for testing.  The day that I had to go in for a routine lung perfusion scan turned out to be the worst day in my life.

Checking in the doctor's room I could barely breathe thinking if I would have to get an I/V or not.  As my mom and I walked to the waiting room, I asked my mom a bunch of questions, like "What are they going to do to me today? Do I have to get a shot?"  As we were casually looking around for seats we finally found one right next to the nurse’s station.  Watching my mom as she fills out the forms, I continue to think of the whether I have to get an I/V shot or not.  Finally after 10 minutes, that felt like 1 hour, they finally call my name.

We walked through the door slowly. The nurses asked me a bunch of questions, like "How are you doing today?"  Answering them quietly as I take off my shoes and step on the scale.  After all the check up stuff, we walk into a room down the hall.  The doctor came in and started talking to my mom about my heart and lungs and other things.  Then he said it, I had to get an I/V inserted so that they could shoot a dye to view all of the arteries in my heart.  I look at my mom with uncertainty, then we walked out the door.  As we entered the sterile room that smelled like alcohol wipes, I hesitantly jumped onto the table and picked the arm I want them to put the I/V.  The first nurse puts the needle in and no blood comes out. She poked another one in my arm and it didn't work out again. She tries about 4 more times.  The tears start to kick in as needle by needle went in.  I pleaded with them to stop.  The nurse finally calls the anesthesiologist to try his luck.   Finally after one try he got it!  After two hours of being poked eight times, we finally left the room to get the lung perfusion scan. My face was all red and full of tears.  When the scan was over, my mom looked at me, feeling sorry for me and asked, "Where do you want to go? We will do whatever you want."

My face finally lit up, as I could feel a change coming. I had a big smile on my face thinking about what to do.   Thinking carefully on what I wanted to do I finally got It! I told her that I wanted to go to the Hawaiian Humane Society.  On our way there, I hoped I would find a dog that I liked.  When we finally got there, I jumped out of the car running from  the cat section then to the dog section.  As I pass the dog section, there was a cage with about 12 puppies! I could barely breathe looking how cute they all were.  I saw the one I wanted, the most fluffiest one there.  Running around the whole humane society trying to find my parents, I led them over and asked them if I could get it.  My dad said yes. I was so happy at the end of the day.

As we were paying for him my mom asked my siblings and I what we wanted to name him.   We couldn't decide on a name.  Blackie?  Fluffy?  Then, as we were driving to our grandma's house my mom finally came up with one.  Hachi, because he was born on the eighth month, weighed eight pounds, and I got eight shots!  And my mom said that our grandma would approve of the dog if it was a Japanese name so my mom thought of Hachi.
When we brought him home, he jumped out of the car running out to my grandma's front yard. When we went home, my mom started gating everything off: the kitchen, bathroom, upstairs everything!  She didn't trust him at all.  She always thought that male dogs weren't as smart as female dogs. That's why she didn't want to get him at first.  Getting ready for bed my mom only would let hachi hachi sleep in her bathroom with it gated until he was old enough to go off on his own.  I remember falling asleep with my hand under the  gate so that I could comfort him throughout the night.  Now, he comes to sleep in my bedroom and I feel safe knowing that he will protect the house.

The worst day of my life has long been forgotten but having Hachi around to protect and love us is all that we can ask for. Even though this day started out as a really bad and horrible day, it turned out to be one of the best days of my  life.

College prompts

1.  Prompt for University of Oregon: The UO is interested in learning more about you. Write an essay (500 words maximum) that shares information that we cannot find elsewhere on your application. Any topic you choose is welcome. Some ideas you might consider include your future ambitions and goals, a special talent or unusual interest that sets you apart from your peers, or a significant experience that influenced your life.

2. Prompt for university of Arizona: A personal statement is our best means of getting to know you and your best means of putting your academic performance and activities in the context of your life. There are no “wrong” answers. When you write your personal statement, tell us about those aspects of your life that are not evident from your academic record. Because personal statements are brief, they usually focus on one aspect of a student’s life. For example, you could focus on a character-defining moment, a cultural awareness, a challenge faced, family background or cultural heritage, individual talents, academic commitment, or extracurricular activities. Tell us what you would like us to know about you in considering you for admission and/or scholarships.

3.  Prompt for university of Florida: We often hear the phrase "the good life." In fact, the University of Florida's common course required of all undergraduate students is titled "What is the Good Life?". The concept of "the good life" can be interpreted in many different ways depending upon the experiences, values and aspirations of each individual.

coming of age (final draft)

Mohs high school tryouts were three days of  pressure, nervousness, and sweating. All of our hard work finally came down to the last day.  I was so nervous about making it through or not made me feel like I could barely breathe!  I could feel the horrible butterflies in my stomach kicking in as the last ten minutes came to an end.  I knew it right then and there I kept telling my self  "I'm done, I just I'm done. I didn't make it."  I stepped out of the drill for just a second, then they called my name.  I could still hear my self saying "I hope I make it, I hope I make it."

When I walked toward him, I could feel my hands shake as I anxiously waited for his words.

Coach Allen asked me,"How do you think you did today?" The words could barely come out of my mouth as the nerves started to kick in but slowly I told coach Allen that I think I tried my best and I think I did okay.  When three other girls came running over he finally told us the news that we didn't make it but gave us the opportunity as manager.  Holding my tears back, trying not to cry in front of everyone, I told myself to think about the positive and not the negative. I thought that this will help me in the future for I know I will eventually get cut from other things and I need to be prepared.

My mom kept telling me to "Be thankful that you're manager and you still can practice with the team, and somewhat be on the team."  I realize I should be thankful because I still get to be with all of my friends.  I'm so glad that I got this opportunity to be manager because it made me realize that you don't have to be on the team to be a part of the team.  As manager, I still get get to be with my friends, get the workouts I need, but I just don't get to play in the games. But that's fine with me.

There were many changes in my life when I came to MoHS.     I went through the quick transition from middle school to high school, making new friends, different teachers, but I didn't think volleyball would be the that was most challenging.  I will always remember the hard work that I put into volleyball tryouts this summer.  I realize that throughout the experience of not making the team I can now understand the heartbreaking sadness of wanting something so badly but not getting it.  That doesn't mean you give up.  Being a team manager is a great experience

Not making the volleyball team was one of the hardest things I have had to face.  I learned that there is more to volleyball than being a player on the team.  I have learned how to deal with disappointment and how to look at the brighter side of things.  I realize that throughout the experience of not making the team I can now understand the heartbreaking sadness of wanting something so badly but not getting it.  This experience will help me in the future because life has many ups and downs.  It is easy to celebrate the ups, but learning to deal with the downs and turning it into a positive is something that I will never forget.

Mini Essay

When you go hiking or swimming, you think nothings going to happen to me.  Well that wasn't the case for David Potts.   He was to busy having the time of his life, playing around and not being aware of his surroundings when he turned his back and BOOM a waved took him in.  I don't like it how people always suspect that its always the park owners fault every single time.  Well its obviously  the person who died fault, they should've been more careful by being more cautious and taking the signs more seriously.  Its a shock too see how many people think that its park owners fault.  There are so many accidents that happen like this and always end up that its the park owners responsibility of their death, thats just wrong.

Many people died in the past years by being so careless.  For example Paula Ramirez and  Elizabeth apparently walked off a steep cliff.  They didn't even bother to look around for what the signs say or look on the ground where they step.  Those people need to be more cautious of their surroundings.  Another incident was with Kevin Oakley he drowned in a pool.  Kevin Oakley should know whether or not he can swim so he doesn't drown.  People should really be more aware of things.

All these different people that die over the past year such as David Potts, Paula Ramirez, Elizabeth, and Kevin Oakley they all have been careless.  They need to learn how to read the signs and not ignore them.  The park owners shouldn't be the ones responsible for that persons death.

“What did you learn about your child’s achievements and experiences in MeneMAC this past year?”

I feel that MeneMAC is a wonderful program for students of all abilities at Moanalua High School.  This year was filled with many NEW experiences:  interviewing a famous surfer, video contests, website building, blogging, etc.  Technology is not just integrated into the curriculum, but is a major component of the English, Social Studies, and Science courses.

Brianne has grown both academically and socially after this year.  The group activities have helped her to become a little more proficient in speaking and sharing ideas.

MeneMAC is awesome and I'm so glad that Brianne was a part of such a successful program.

Merchant of Venice (final)

"Don't take your friends for granted and give them what they want, thinking that they will do as they say."  Many of the characters in the Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare learned many life lessons as they developed throughout the play.  They have very unique personalities and style.   This includes characters such as Shylock, Portia, Antonio, and Bassanio. Shylock is one of the main characters in the Merchant of Venice.  He is selfish, cranky, and stubborn in his beliefs.  Shylock is an example of a greedy miser, meaning a person who hoards wealth and spends as little money as possible. Shylock also learned that doing business with a friend isn't always a good decision.

Shylock is a selfish, greedy person who tries to make the cheapest deals he can possibly get, but doesn't always get what he wants.  Everything has to be perfect for him.  "Three thousand ducats for three months.  And Antonio as guarantor... I will be certain I can.  And to be certain, I'll think it over  May I speak with Antonio?" 1.3.10.  Shylock is being way too picky. If he really wanted the deal he would take it right away just in case they call it off.  He is a very  complicated character he should just say you want to make the deal even though it might cost him three thousand ducats.  Shylock has a thing about Christians. He can't stand them and does not stand to trust them.  "I've always shrugged this off, patiently, because suffering is the trade ark of our race."1.3.107-108 .  Shylock is not trying to be mean or racist about his dislike of Christians, it's just that he had a bad experience with them and they just don't get along.  Even though Shylock dislikes the Christians, he still has to make a choice whether or not to make the deal about the three thousand ducats.

Shylock faces many conflicts throughout the play.  Many of his conflicts are due to his hatred of the Christians.  "I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, and so following; but I will not eat with you, drink with you nor pray with you." 1.3.9.  Shylock is being crazy about having these thoughts about the Christians because he should trust his friend, who is the one setting up the deal. Christians just don't believe in the same things as the Jews.  He is also overreacting because it's just a deal, it's not like they are going to be best friends.  Another of the conflicts Shylock deals with is again about racism.  His daughter Jessica leaves him to change to be a Christian and runs off to marry a Christian, Lorenzo.  "I'm sorry thou wilt leave my father so." 2.3.1. Jessica wants nothing to do with her father because he is unreasonable, selfish, and demanding.  However, she is in way over her head right now because even though her father is like that doesn't mean she should just run away like that. Those are some of the conflicts that Shylock experiences.

Shylock is a sad and lonely man, who is not that patient or likable.  When something looks like a really good deal or everything is going well it turns out to be the most depressing thing that could happen.  "All of Antonio's ship has been lost and he has defaulted on his loan from Shylock." 1.3.1. Shylock should be mad at Antonio, however, he learns that not everything is perfect and going to go his way and he is forgiving.  Many of his personalities are very complicated.  He can't tell if it is going to be good or bad.  For example when his daughter Jessica ran away he didn't think that his daughter would do that.  "I'm sorry tho wilt leave my father so." 2.3.1.  Shylock learns that you have to go with the flow. He also learns that not everything goes your way.  That's what the character of Shylock learns throughout the play.

Shylock is a complicated character who starts as a selfish, greedy villain that doesn't care about others and what they think.  A lot was going on for Shylock like his daughter running away from him, marrying a Christian, and taking his three thousand ducats away with her, him being a careless person, and not thinking what anyone else thinks of him, and so many more.  He had many problems going on during that time.  From the beginning of the Merchant of Venice to the end, Shylock learns how to manage his problems better.  At the beginning of the play, everyone thought less of Shylock and what kind of character he is.  Towards the end of the play, you tend to see that you'll feel sorry for Shylock and that he just has too much going against him.  He endured much abuse, but was forgiving, and upheld the customs and laws.

Poem (I am a puppy)

I am a puppy
Sometimes too nice
Hardly too mean

People see always
The good in me
But never
The bad
You may not
Know me
The Angry
and mean side

I am sweet
But yet sour

I can be shy
At first
But later I will be friendly

I can be active
And I can be lazy

If you threaten
My family
I will be fiesty
But other than that
I will be easy going
The end

The merchant of venice (rough draft)

In the play, the Merchant of Venice they have many different stories and characters.  Many of the characters, including Portia, Shylock, Antonio, and Bassanio, have similar problems and story lines in the play.  They all have to connect in some point of the story.  All the characters in the Merchant of Venice have unique personalities, Shylock, for example, is a very complicated person in the play.  This leads to many of his difficulties throughout the play.

During the play of Merchant of Venice most of the characters had a disappointment in some way towards Shylock.  According to the book, many of Shylock's servants, family members, or friends had some kind of hatred in him.  This includes his daughter, Jessica.  Even though Jessica had some differences with her father, I don't think she should have left him. Jessica hated him because of the kind of person he was, and she was embarassed of him.  His servant also left him.  I don't think his servant should have left him because he's like the way he is because he was losing everything he owns.  This is the start of some of his difficulties.

The character of Shylock faces many conflicts throughout the play.  The conflict that he faces is that Bassanio can't pay back the three thousand ducats that he has to pay back to Shylock.  This is one of his conflicts because if Bassanio doesn't pay him back then he will lose another friend.  He shouldn't have loaned him the money, as this could affect their friendship doing business together.  Another conflict is that towards the end he has to cut off the flesh of Bassanio because he couldnt pay back the three thousand ducats.  If he couldn't do it they shouldn't have made that deal.  I think they could have made a more reasonable bet or deal.  Those are some conflicts that Shylock faced throughout the Merchant of Venice..

Shylocks character teaches us many life lessons.  He teaches us that we shouldn't do business with other friends.  Doing business with other friends can lead to difficulties in your friendship with that friend. That's also a lesson because some people might want to run a business with a friend and they show how it changes your friendship.  A lesson that the character of Shylock teaches us is to be nice to everyone you know or else they will leave you.  That's a lesson to learn because if you are mean to everyone in your life no one will like you back.  I think this is a good lesson because you never know when someone in your life will leave you.  Also because  you have to be nice to everyone.  That is some lessons the character Shylock teaches us.

The merchant of Venice teaches us a lot of lessons, how the characters develop, and the conflicts that each of the characters face.  All the characters have struggles and problems during the story.  Shylock for example is a complicated person in this play.  I think shylock is a complicated person because he has many problems or disappointment.  Thats what the play is all about.

Poem

I am a puppy
Sometimes too nice
Hardly too mean

People see always
The good in me
But never
The bad

You may not
Know me
The Angry
and mean side

I am sweet
But yet sour

I can be shy
At first
But later I will be friendly

I can be active
And I can be lazy

If you threaten
My family
I will be fiesty
But other than that
I will be easy going
The end

essay (A coney island life)

The world today consists of many people that are starting to take the world for granted. Many do not realize that time doesn’t wait for anyone which is why one must value every single accomplishment, enjoy every minute, fulfill our hopes and dreams, and appreciate the many things we have in life. In the poem “A Coney Island Life”, the poet James L. Weil compares life to his time at Coney Island.  In this poem the poet is telling his readers the fact that all of what he has hoped and dreamed for is vanishing and is describing it as his one last ride.

The poem tells the readers that you must use your time wisely in order to have the life you’ve dreamed of. This poem consists of many hidden meaning behind each line such as “Having lived a Coney Island life, on roller coaster ups and downs”, James L. Weil is using the roller coasters to describe the many hardships and also the good things that had happen throughout his life. Another quote from this poem is “and seen my helium hopes, break skyward without me”, this is telling the people that the helium or in another form, a balloon, represents his hopes and dreams and it’s floating away from him, leaving him unable to do anything about it except watch as it “breaks skyward” or leaves without him.

Although this is a poem that doesn’t consist of many lines or stanzas, it holds much meaning within its content. “I take perhaps my last my last ride on this planet-carousel and ask, how many more times round”, these lines symbolize his last few chances to make a difference in his life and the poet asks himself how much longer does he have, or how many years does he have left to live. Finally the piece that completes the poem, “I have to catch the brass ring sun before the game is up”, the brass ring describes the last remaining chances he has before the ride, in other words his life, comes to an end.
Through metaphor and simile the poet relates the success, hardships, and limitations of life to a game at the carnival. In life, opportunities will come our way and we have to make sure we don't take them for granted.  Time is very precious and we can't expect life to wait on us to understand the beauty of the lives we live. Every moment of your life counts and you don't realize how much you really have until your faced with the end. Through metaphors and similes, the poet portrays that life is short so we must appreciate life before times up. Therefore, he makes us think about our personal lives.
